Belfast Invitational Meet

Athletes from across Northern Ireland, Ireland, UK and Europe took part in the Belfast International Meet at the Mary Peters Track on Saturday 11th September, as a fitting end to the track and field season for many.

Leon Reid represented us proudly wearing his club vest as he competed in the 100m event finishing in 10.47 seconds clinching 2nd place to Danish athlete Fredrik Schou-Nielsen by a hundredth of a second.

He commented afterwards “I wanted to come here though it’s very late in the season. I missed my plane here because of a train fatality in London. I really enjoyed the Olympics though I would have liked more preparation time. I’m aiming for the Birmingham Games “

A fitting end to his season after the highs of reaching the semi final of the 200m at the Toyko Olympics.

County Championships 2021

The Mr. Oil County County Track & Field Championships took place over 2 nights at the Enniscorthy Sports Hub last week. A well organised event on both nights and special thanks must be given to County Board and all who helped on both nights under covid guidlines to ensure the smooth running.

It was great to see so many attend and it gave a lot of athletes a chance to tackle different events and quite a few picked up medals in the process. The weather was kind on both nights and a mix of all ages was great to see. There was a full selection of events from the 100m up to 5000m, long jump, triple jump to the not as popular pole vault and steeplechase events which made their debut.

A lot of athletes were tasting Track running possibly for the first time and threw themselves into events they never thought they would enjoy.

Oylegate 10k/Half Marathon 2021

The Oylegate 10k/ Half Marathon took place on a warm morning today. 4 of our athletes took advantage of the opportunity to race again.

Gavin Hayes ran the 10k route in 43.08 coming home in 16th place.

The half marathon was a 2 loop route of the 10k and Donal Grant 1.36.08 , Finbarr Bradley 1.39.07 & Fran Power in 1.55.28 all ran really well and did not let the warm morning effect their running. A few P.B. times thrown in for good measure.

Well done gents

Olympics 2020 Leon Reid

Olympic Athlete Update

Now that the dust has settled and everyone has returned home from Japan it seems an appropriate time to post about club member Leon Reids exploits St the Toyko Olympic Games.

Leon lined up to race the 200m in Toyko making his way through his heat into the semi finals. Unfortunately he bowed out at semi final stage but as he indicated himself there is more to come from him in the years ahead.

A fantastic experience for any athlete to compete at the Olympics and compete against the best in the world. He did himself and our club proud in Toyko.

Well done.

National Juvenile Championships

The Irish Life Health National Juvenile Championships took place across the weekend in the fantastic venue that is Tullamore. Again the Menapians athletes took to the road and competed with pride for their Club.

Friday evening saw the start of competition and in what can only be described as a huge downpour in the U18 final Eimear Halpin ran a super race to claim 4th over 400m hurdles in 1:11.11. On Saturday Triini Jurisoo again took her place in the throwing cage and in a tough U18 competition finished a well earned 5th place in the hammer throwing a best of 31.51.

Jack Halpin competed on Sunday in the U16 discuss and finished a creditable 10th place in a strong competitive field of throwers.

Our final competitor at the Irish Life National Juvenile was Ruby Reynolds who was racing U16 girls 80m hurdles.

Ruby has put in very dedicated training to get there and ran Heat 1 12.93 finishing 3rd and taking an automatic qualifying spot for the final.

Unfortunately Ruby suffered every athletes dread and was disqualified in the final for a false start. This was a stroke of bad luck but she took it in her stride and we are sure she will bounce right back after a break.

Special mention to our coaches for their efforts working with these states having them competition ready.
